There will be disagreement. In the staffroom, in the classroom, in the playground and, before long, in the polling station.

Schools are about to be asked for more of this work. Citizenship becomes statutory in primary schools under the new national curriculum, published in spring 2027 and taught from September 2028. A national oracy framework is on its way. Ofsted now looks for enrichment with a civic engagement strand. And if votes at 16 becomes law, today’s Year 11s will be voters.

Anyone who has led a class discussion knows the three fears: it won’t start, it won’t stop, or it will turn personal. These sessions give teachers practical ways through all three, with games they can run on Monday morning.

The approach comes from more than twenty years of Theatre for Democracy work, including a six-year national programme with over 75 local authorities and the Electoral Commission, and fourteen years in higher education training facilitators to deliver this work.

Two students argue it out in the middle of the circle. The teacher’s job is to keep the room on the side of dialogue.
