The Four Frames of Facilitation

An approach to maintaining and improving facilitation skills in theatre and drama.

The missing piece...

While there's no shortage of books on drama and theatre, precious few cover the practical realities of leading dynamic sessions. The academic texts offer us the 'why'. Collections of games and exercise give us the 'what'. But we are left to find out the 'how' on our own. It's as if good intentions and engaging content are all that matter.

The truth is, real-world facilitation is anything but predictable. It is messy and it is complex. No matter how good the plan, we need to think on our feet, respond to unique spaces and participant needs, and make split-second decisions to keep the session flowing.

When things go smoothly, it's easy to think we just got lucky and try to recreate that "effortless" success. Likewise, when challenges arise, it's tempting to simply write off the activity as a failure - never to be attempted again.

A conceptual framework

The Four Frames of Facilitation (4frames) offers a comprehensive conceptual framework for facilitators, directors & teachers to think about, analyse, and improve their practice.

Your delivery style

Neither a list of rules, nor a set of exercises, 4frames training focuses on the development of a personal approach to leading drama/theatre processes.

Living, breathing, workshops

No two workshops are the same. Working with 4frames centres on confident adaption to prevailing circumstances, allowing the workshop to unfold, whilst staying true to purpose.

Quick results, lasting impact

The framework is scalable. You don't have to commit your life to learning it. See a difference after one session, or come to a facilitation retreat and go deeper. After this you'll be part of the 4frames community of practice and be able to connect with other facilitators, share experiences, and continue to learn and grow together long after the workshop or retreat concludes.

How to get involved:

Facilitation Retreats

Held over 3-5 days facilitation retreats offer an immersive learning experience, with a deep exploration of the Four Frames technique, encouraging personal reflection and development of individual facilitation style. This format fosters a strong community of practice that extends beyond the retreat itself.

Foundation retreats are held quarterly in different regions of the UK. Advanced retreats focusing on specific skill areas and themes are available for practitioners who have completed the foundation sessions, or have previously trained in Four Frames.

Managing a team?
Member of a collective?

Four Frames work originally grew out of the challenge of scaling a regional workshop programme to meet sudden national demand. With multiple teams delivering the same project there was a need to develop a shared vocabulary and syntax of facilitation that would ensure consistency of quality whilst allowing for the individuality of each practitioner.

As a result 4frames is an invaluable approach for facilitators who work together as a collective or those operating as a team within an education or outreach department.

If you are interested in bespoke workshops and processes to:

  • provide CPD for teams of facilitators,
  • distil the company style to roll out as part of induction activities
  • develop appraisal activities that are genuinely developmental
  • evaluate delivery across the department/company,
  • foster genuine communities of practice within organisations
